Auto driver keeps his word on free rides
New Delhi: Before the 2011 ODI World Cup began, autorickshaw driver Shahid Khan had made a promise to the people of Delhi. He had painted a sign on his autorickshaw in Hindi that said: “Bharat ko World Cup jeetne par ek din ki dilli ki free service!” (A day of free rides to every Delhi commuter if India wins the World Cup). On Sunday, he kept that promise.
“I ferried my first passenger to Jama Masjid from Seelampur,” said an elated Khan who had decorated his vehicle with garlands. Needless to say, he was much in demand. “I was taking a passenger to Daryaganj and was stuck in a traffic jam. Someone read the message at the back of my auto and insisted I take him to Laxmi Nagar. I had a hard time explaining to
him that I already had a passenger,” he said. Passenger reactions varied from amusement to confusion. Some even thought he was joking. Sudhakar Pathak was apprehensive before he boarded the auto with his 13-year-old daughter to Safdarjung hospital. “Who does charity in Delhi? It's difficult to trust people,” Pathak said.
